Every reader brings a different perspective to the same story.
There's something fascinating about sharing a story with readers. You spend years creating a world, developing characters, and carefully weaving together moments that you hope will mean something. Then, one day, you release that story into the world, and it begins to take on a life beyond anything you could have anticipated.
That's been one of the most interesting parts of publishing Moons and Shadows, the foundational book of the Shadow Bound Series. Readers have begun sharing their experiences, and what I find particularly intriguing isn't simply whether they enjoyed the book. It's what they connected with, what challenged them, and which characters stayed with them afterward.
Because not every reader walks away with the same experience.
A Story That Asks You to Take Your Time
One of the recurring observations in reader reviews is that Moons and Shadows isn't necessarily a book to rush through. It’s layered world, intertwined relationships, and unfolding mysteries invite readers to slow down and pay attention.
As Goodreads reviewer LiAnna described it, this is a story to approach when you're ready to sit with something emotionally substantial. Other readers have expressed similar thoughts, describing the experience as immersive, detailed, and filled with discoveries that become clearer as the story progresses.
And not everyone approaches that pacing in the same way. Some readers enjoy taking their time with every detail, while others prefer a faster-moving story. I appreciate both perspectives because understanding what readers experience helps me understand how my storytelling reaches different audiences.
The Characters Who Stay With Us
Another theme appearing throughout the reviews is the emotional connection readers develop with the characters.
Rebecca described having a visceral reaction to their journeys, particularly the relationships, heartbreak, and discoveries woven throughout the story. Meanwhile, Shawna Shay highlighted the combination of emotional moments, unexpected twists, and the courage she felt while following the characters.
What interests me most about these responses is how differently readers connect with the same fictional people. One reader may be drawn to Izayah's devotion, another to Runa's journey, while someone else finds themselves appreciating the humor and warmth that emerge from the extended family.
And sometimes, it's a character like Missy who manages to make an impression all her own.
These responses remind me that characters don't have to mean precisely the same thing to everyone. Their stories can resonate for entirely different reasons.
Beyond the Fantasy
Although Moons and Shadows is a military fantasy filled with quintessence, mystery, and slow-burn romance, readers have also recognized the themes of healing, memory, sacrifice, and found family.
LiAnna described the story as one of trauma and healing, while H.S. Akers emphasized the complicated relationships and emotional depth beneath its fantasy elements.
Those observations are especially meaningful to me because the emotional journeys within the Shadow Bound Series are every bit as important as the magical ones.
The characters aren't simply trying to survive extraordinary circumstances. They're learning to confront their histories, question what they've been taught, and discover what it means to move forward.
And healing, as many of us know, rarely follows a straight line.
Your Perspective Is Part of the Conversation
Perhaps one of my favorite aspects of receiving reader feedback is discovering something I hadn't considered. A reader might interpret a conversation differently than I intended or become attached to a character I hadn't expected to capture their attention.
I don't think every reader needs to agree about a story. In fact, some of the most interesting conversations begin when we don't.
That's part of what I hope to encourage within our Moonlighter community: thoughtful discussions, different perspectives, and the freedom to experience a story in your own way.
As we continue toward Shadows and Mist Volume 1, I'm looking forward to hearing more of those conversations.
I'd Love to Hear From You
If you've read Moons and Shadows, whether the Foundational Edition or Special Edition, I'd love to know what stood out to you. Was there a character you connected with? A moment that surprised you? Something you questioned or found yourself thinking about afterward?
And if you've already shared a review, thank you. Reviews help other readers decide whether a story might be right for them, and they give independent authors valuable insight into how their work is being received.
You can explore more reader experiences and share your own on Goodreads.
So, Moonlighters, I'm curious: Which character from Moons and Shadows has stayed with you the most, and why?
With gratitude,
